From International Student to Canadian PR through Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Many students ask EGI whether they can apply for Canadian permanent residency after graduation in Canada. Since January 1, 2015, the Canadian government began to use the federal Express Entry (EE) system to manage applications for permanent residence in Canada and to fill Canada’s labor needs through economic immigration programs. EE is a federal government program, and it is not province-specific. Since it is one of the fastest and most direct immigration routes, it is also the most popular immigration program choice for international students.

The Express Entry (EE) system mainly integrates the original: Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Canadian Skilled Worker (FST) programs into the same online system. Applicants who meet the minimum requirements must first submit their application and establish a personal profile. According to the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scoring criteria, the government will invite applicants with higher scores or from a specific group to apply for Canadian permanent residency.

After the implementation of the Express Entry system, many Canadian international students can meet the minimum application requirements for the CEC program if they have accumulated at least one year of work experience after graduation. On November 19, 2016, the government revised the original scoring criteria allowing Canadian international students can get up to 30 extra points on the system, and the points that can be obtained by holding a full-time job offer from a Canadian employer have been reduced from the original 600 points to a maximum of 200 points. The changes made it easier for international students to receive an invitation to become permanent residents of Canada.
