Canada Considers Cap on International Student Enrollment Due to Housing Concerns

The Canadian government is considering implementing a cap on international student enrollment as a potential solution to ease the strain on the housing market. Sean Fraser, the newly appointed Minister of Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities, who previously served as the immigration minister, raised the idea and aimed to collaborate with educational institutions to find ways to address the challenge of housing for the growing number of international students.

According to the government, Canada has recently seen a surge in the number of international students, reaching over 800,000. Fraser’s approach involves urging institutions that admit substantial numbers of students to take responsibility for helping to address housing needs in a competitive rental market. He also criticized certain institutions for enrolling more students than housing can accommodate, exacerbating the housing crisis.
