Should I choose a Canadian college or university?

Canadian colleges and universities have their characteristics. Although colleges and universities are both considered higher education in Canada. The difference between the two is divided by the teaching methodology, content, and teaching objectives.

The admission requirements of universities are usually higher than that of colleges. Generally, universities require an average score of 75% or higher in high school, and universities with more excellent reputations will require an average score of 85% or higher. There will be an English requirement (IELTS 6.5 or an equivalent), or the English preparation courses are available for students before admission. Universities in Canada mainly offers bachelor’s degree (usually 3 years in duration), honors bachelor’s degree (usually 4 years in duration), master’s degree (usually 1-2 years in duration), and doctorate (usually 4-6 years in duration). Universities’ teaching methodology mainly allows professors and students to ‘learn’ together through discussions and experiments. It is more suitable for students who want to further their studies after graduation.

The admission requirements of the college are relatively flexible. Generally, the average score in high school of above 70-75%, and the IELTS minimum requirement is 5.5 or 6.0. Most colleges have certificate programs (usually 1 year in duration), diploma programs (usually 2-3 years in duration), and bachelor’s degrees (usually 3-4 years in duration). However, colleges typically provide English preparation courses for students who do not meet the English requirement. Many colleges also cooperate with local companies, and some even arrange paid internships (Co-op) for students, which is a better choice for students who want to work immediately after graduation.

In conclusion, the choice of college or university is different for every student. As an idiom says, “all roads lead to Rome,” even students whose high school grades may not meet the admission requirements for college or university can also choose to make up their high school credits. They may also choose to enter the college as a stepping stone to improve their score and transfer their credits to later enter any university of their interest.
